Akka (a-k'a) means older sister in Tamil, Lawrence's native Indian language. His older sister, when visiting from India, used Meyer Lemons from his backyard to make a traditional South Indian style pickle. The authentic flavor and the distinct preservative-free taste of the homemade condiment drew many followers. It gained instant popularity amongst his friends, including those who were unfamiliar with Indian cooking. 

Lawrence grew in a large family with many siblings. An annual pilgrimage to his ancestral church in a distant village was a family tradition. His mother used to prepare her chicken curry sauce - a recipe she learned from his grandmother - to serve the family delicious meals during the few days of their stay at the village. This time tested tradition of making prepackaged food is brought alive at Akka’s Handcrafted Foods.

Akka’s handcrafts their sauces, chutneys and marinades, combining the art of traditional cooking and the modern culinary science to make fresh tasting food with authentic flavors. They use fresh produce and spices to make their products and do not use any preservatives or artificial additives. Today they are Good Food Award winners who continue to bring innovative products to market while honoring the traditions they carry on.
