Basbaas is a line of Somali sauces featuring bold flavors with a sweet and tangy twist. Founder, Hawa Hassan was a Somali refugee who was
born in Mogadishu during a time of war. By five she was living with her single mother and siblings in a UN refugee camp in Nairobi, Kenya. Within two years her mother had worked hard enough to own a business and as the family moved out of the camp, she made a very difficult decision: to send Hawa to Seattle, WA, to live with a family friend.
From there Hawa was scouted by a modeling agent and moved to NYC.
Like so many immigrant entrepreneurs, Hawa has built on her heritage and love of her native cuisine to launch her line. Designed for an emerging generation of foodies with adventurous tastes, Basbaas is truly global and entirely local. The inspiration and recipe come from traditional Somali culture, while the ingredients are local and all-natural. Basbaas has partnered with Dr. Hawa Abdi's Foundation
and fundraises for their school sector.
